Timbuktu was founded in the fifth century of the Hijra (10th century AD). The city eventually became a commercial hub and center of trade for caravans from the Sahara Desert. People from all over Africa settled in Timbuktu. One of the first great buildings was the Great Mosque and following was the Sankore Mosque.
