The Songhai Empire was the last of the great West African empires. It was originally a state within the Mali empire, but it later gained its independence after the decline of Mali. Occupying roughly the same territory as the Malian Empire, but larger. The Songhai Empire was the primary force in West Africa during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
